Description Percentage of eligible secondary school pupils taking Free School Meals is the number of secondary school pupils taking Free School Meals as a percentage of those eligible to receive them. Local Education Authorities (LEAs) have a duty to provide Free School Meals to pupils from families receiving income support or a job seeker's allowance where the circumstances are reasonable for the provision of school meals. Section 512 of the Education Act 1996, as amended by Section 116 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998).

School closures between December 2020 and March 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic meant that the 2020-21 census data was delayed to 20 April 2021.

Due to the level of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in January 2022, the 2021-22 census date was delayed to 15 February 2022.
